Dowel Joinery

A doweling jig holds a drill guide at exactly the right position to bore a hole at a precise location on the edge or face of a board. It ensures that holes in mating boards align perfectly when the joint is assembled, which is critical for flush edge joints, shelf pin holes, and frame-and-panel assembly.

The most commonly used dowel diameters in furniture and cabinetmaking are 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, and 1/2 inch. Smaller diameters are used for alignment in thin stock or narrow edges; larger diameters carry more shear load. Dowels are round cylindrical rods that fit into drilled holes and provide both alignment and shear strength perpendicular to the joint. Biscuits are thin oval wafers of compressed wood that fit into slots cut by a biscuit joiner; they provide alignment and some shear resistance but rely more on glue area. Dowels generally provide more mechanical strength for structural joints.

A handheld drill works well when used with a doweling jig, since the jig guides the bit straight into the work at the correct angle. Without a jig, getting perfectly plumb, parallel holes freehand is very difficult. A drill press adds even more accuracy for production work but is not required.

The spiral grooves machined into commercial wood dowels serve two purposes: they allow excess glue to escape the bottom of the hole as the dowel is driven in (preventing hydraulic lock), and they increase the surface area covered with glue for a stronger bond.
