Sanding Drums & Sleeves

Sanding drums are cylindrical abrasive tools used to smooth inside curves, arched cutouts, and tight radii that flat sandpaper cannot reach. They are mounted in a drill press, oscillating spindle sander, or handheld drill and rotate to abrade curved wood surfaces evenly.

A sleeveless sanding drum is a rubber drum body without a permanent abrasive coating. Instead, it accepts removable sanding sleeves that slip over the drum and grip via expansion when the drum is tightened. Yes. Most sanding drums with a mandrel shank can be installed in a standard handheld drill chuck. For better control and consistent depth, a drill press or dedicated spindle sander is preferred, but a handheld drill works well for freehand curve shaping.

Start with a coarser grit (60–80) to remove saw marks or reshape a curve, then progress to 100–120 for smoothing, and finish with 150–180 or finer before applying a stain or top coat. Moving through grit stages produces cleaner results than jumping directly to fine grits.

Keep the workpiece moving steadily—holding it stationary against a spinning drum concentrates heat and scorches the wood. Use fresh sleeves at appropriate grits, work at moderate speeds, and move with a smooth, continuous motion to distribute abrasive contact across the surface.

Yes. Sanding drums work on MDF, plywood, and solid wood. MDF is very abrasive to sleeves, so expect shorter sleeve life when shaping or smoothing MDF curved edges compared to solid wood.
