For general wood cutting on a CNC router, upcut spiral bits provide good chip clearance and are the most common choice. O-flute (single-flute) bits work particularly well for softer woods and plywood at higher feed rates because the large flute clears chips before they re-cut. An O-flute bit has a single, rounded flute channel that forms an O shape in cross-section. This geometry allows exceptionally large chip loads, making it ideal for high-speed CNC passes in wood and soft materials where chip buildup can cause burning or bit breakage.

All CNC router bits in this collection use 1/4" shanks, which fit standard 1/4" collets on most CNC routers and spindles.

Use a ballnose bit for 3D relief carving, contoured surfaces, and any toolpath that needs to follow a curved profile. Use straight or upcut spiral bits for profile cutting, pocketing flat-bottomed recesses, and through-cuts. The ballnose upcut spiral is a good starting point for 3D work.

A tapered ballnose bit has a tapered body that narrows toward the tip, allowing it to reach into tight recesses and produce finely detailed relief carvings with less risk of the shank contacting the workpiece. It is particularly popular for decorative sign carving and 3D panels.

V-groove engraving bits cut a V-shaped channel whose width varies with the depth of cut. On a CNC, varying the depth as the bit traces letterforms creates thicker and thinner strokes that mimic hand-carved lettering. Shallower angles produce narrower, crisper lines; wider angles produce bolder strokes.

Remove pitch and resin buildup from bit flutes using a bit-cleaning solution and a soft brush after each session. Inspect the cutting edge under magnification for chips or dullness. Sharp bits produce cleaner cuts and reduce spindle load; dull bits increase heat and tear-out.
