Flush Trim

A flush trim bit has a pilot bearing that matches the diameter of the cutting edges. The bearing rides along a template or the edge of a reference surface while the bit cuts the workpiece flush to that same line, producing a perfect match between the two surfaces.

A flush trim bit typically has the pilot bearing at the tip (bottom), allowing it to follow a template fixed below the workpiece. A pattern bit has the bearing at the top (shank end) and follows a template clamped on top of the workpiece. The Multi Bearing Pattern Router Bit Set provides both bearing positions in one set.

A downshear bit has cutting edges ground so the shear angle directs cutting forces downward into the workpiece surface. This prevents the top veneer or face grain from lifting or tearing during the cut. Use the downshear flush trim bits when trimming veneered plywood, MDF-backed veneer, or any panel where the top surface is delicate.
