Penetrating Finishing Oils & Protective Waxes for Wood
Oil and wax finishes are the oldest and most natural approach to protecting wood — they feed the fibers, enhance color and grain depth, and produce a surface that can be maintained and refreshed without stripping. Unlike film-forming finishes (lacquer, polyurethane) that build on top of the wood, oils and waxes penetrate into the fiber, so they never peel and are easy to spot-repair without witness lines.
The Odie's Oil range is exceptional for food-contact surfaces. Odies Oil is a blend of natural oils and waxes that penetrates and hardens in the wood rather than forming a surface film, and it is food safe once cured — making it the right choice for cutting boards, serving boards, countertops, and children's toys. Odies Oil Wood Butter is a softer, more spreadable formula for application by hand on turned bowls and carved surfaces.
For furniture finishing and antique restoration, the Liberon wax range adds protective sheen and color. Liberon Black Bison Wax is a traditional French-formula paste wax that feeds and polishes hardwoods and antique surfaces without buildup. Liming Wax adds a white-pigmented effect to open-grain woods for a bleached, Scandinavian look.
Oil or Wax — Which Is Right for Your Project?
- Penetrating oil: best for raw wood, cutting boards, floors, and turning projects where you want the look and feel of natural wood with good moisture resistance
- Hard wax: ideal over oil or bare wood for a polished, richer sheen; requires periodic reapplication for maintenance
- Oil + wax combination: many finishers apply an oil first for penetration and protection, then buff on a wax topcoat for the final sheen
