Wet/dry sandpaper uses a waterproof silicon carbide abrasive bonded to a water-resistant backing, allowing it to be used with water or mineral spirits as a lubricant. This prevents clogging and produces an exceptionally fine finish. Regular paper-backed sandpaper is intended for dry use only and breaks down when wet.

Sand bare wood through a progression ending at 150 or 180 grit before applying an oil-based stain, or 180–220 grit before a water-based stain or dye. Stopping too coarse leaves visible scratch patterns under translucent stains; going finer than 220 on porous woods can close the grain and reduce stain penetration.

Yes. Mirka Abranet discs are available in 5-inch and 6-inch diameters with hook-and-loop (Velcro) backing, compatible with most standard random orbit sanders. The mesh construction pairs especially well with sanders that have dust extraction ports, as it allows maximum airflow and dust capture.

The Turners Five Roll Mesh Abrasive Assortment is a set of flexible abrasive rolls in assorted grits designed for wood turners. The mesh format resists clogging from the fine dust produced during turning and can be used with or without backing for sanding spindles, bowls, and other turned profiles.

Use 320–400 grit wet/dry sandpaper or fine non-woven scuff pads between finish coats. The goal is to knock down any raised grain or dust nibs without cutting through the finish layer. Wipe away all dust before the next coat.

Its aluminum oxide abrasive is sharp enough for efficient stock removal at medium grits and produces a clean scratch pattern at fine grits.

A useful starter set covers 80, 120, 180, and 220 grit—these four cover rough surface prep, intermediate smoothing, pre-finish sanding, and between-coat work. As your projects grow in complexity, you'll add coarser (60) and finer (320–400) grits. The Mirka Abranet assortment packs are a practical starting point.

Resinous woods like pine load sandpaper fast. Use a sandpaper cleaning stick frequently to restore the abrasive, or switch to Mirka Abranet mesh discs whose open lattice sheds resin buildup far better than conventional paper. Dust extraction also helps by removing debris before it can re-embed in the abrasive.
