The bird's mouth joint has been a favorite of wooden boat builders for decades, allowing the construction of hollow masts that are incredibility light and strong. In recent years this simple joint made at the router table had been embraced by furniture and cabinet makers looking to simplify all types of mitered joinery from coopered round columns to mitered cabinet corners. The bird's mouth joint provides three distinct advantages over a traditional miter joint.

  • First, it is fast and accurate requiring only one edge of each workpiece to be profiled.
  • Second, the nesting effect of the joint greatly simplifies workpiece alignment during glue-up.
  • Third, the resulting joint is incredibly strong due to its increased glue surface and joint geometry.

The Infinity Tools Bird's Mouth Router bits are available in three sizes allowing you to make projects with 30°/60° joints (6/12 sides), 45°joints (8 sides), and 22.5° joints (16 sides). Infinity Tools now offers setup blocks for all three bird's mouth Router Bits (sold separately) eliminating guesswork and making setup a breeze. Choose the 3-Pc. Bird's Mouth Router Bit Set 00-570 and get all three router bits plus all three setup blocks for one low price.

Bird's Mouth Router Bits

Our Bird's Mouth router bits get their name from the unique shape that they cut. Unlike traditional joinery router bits, the Bird's Mouth bits are designed to cut all types of mitered joinery from coopered round columns to mitered cabinet corners.

The Bird's Mouth Joint is a great alternative to traditional miter joints.
The Bird's Mouth Joint is a great alternative to traditional miter joints.

The Bird's Mouth Joint has been around for a long time and gets its unusual name because it resembles the open beak of a baby bird waiting to be fed. Boatbuilders were some of the first to adopt the bird's mouth joint for making hollow sailboat masts that are incredibly strong and light. The Infinity Tools Bird's Mouth Router Bits are available in three sizes that allow you to make projects with 6 or 12 sides (57-505) 8 sides (57-506) or 16 sides (57-507), and we now offer a precision setup block for each to eliminate setup frustration.

The beauty of the Bird's Mouth Joint is that only one edge of each "stave" needs to be routed. This simplifies setup, increases accuracy, and speeds up production. The beak shape lets the 90° edge of the adjoining stave nest in place providing an excellent glue surface and a mechanical corner to help keep the parts in alignment during assembly.

Another nice feature of the Bird's Mouth Joint is that you can produce projects with three different looks.  Smooth joint transitions, stepped joint transitions, and even turned round projects are all possible.

The Infinity Tools 3-Pc. Bird's Mouth Router Bit Set (00-570) includes all three router bits and all three setup blocks.
The Infinity Tools 3-Pc. Bird's Mouth Router Bit Set (00-570) includes all three router bits and all three setup blocks.

Here at Infinity Tools, we offer a setup block for each of the Bird's Mouth router bits that are designed to work with stock of specific thicknesses. For 6, 8, and 16-sided projects use 3/4" material for an outer edge that can easily be sanded smooth. For 12-sided projects use 1/2" material. Thicker and thinner material can be used but may require bit height and/or fence adjustments to achieve your desired results. Choosing thicker material or adjusting the bit slightly allows a stepped profile to be created that can be very attractive and adds a look similar to overlapping shingles.

A simple equation is used to figure out how wide each stave needs to be to make a project of a certain diameter.  You can find and print this handy "Cheat Sheet" in the "Documents" tab on the Infinity Tools Bird's Mouth Router Bits page. Here is an example of how easy it is. First, decide how many sides your project will have and choose the correct router bit. Let's go with 8 sides and use router bit 57-506. Second, decide the diameter you want your project to be. let's go with 12". Now we can use the formula found in the instructions for 57-506. (Project Diameter ÷ 2.4 = Stave Width) to find our stave width. 12 ÷ 2.4 = 5, so we will need 8 staves that are 5" wide.

The Bird's Mouth Bits can be used to make elongated shapes like ovals where at least two of the staves are wider than the others. They can also be used to make mitered corner details for cabinets. For those that would like to sand, plane, or turn your projects round we include an easy-to-use formula in the Instructions to determine how thick each stave will need to be in order to make your project completely round.

Band clamps can secure a variety of shapes that would be impossible with standard clamps.
Band clamps can secure a variety of shapes that would be impossible with standard clamps.

When it comes time to glue up your project I recommend reaching for a band clamp. The band puts equal pressure all the way around your project pulling all sides together equally and takes advantage of this joint's tendency to "self square". If you don't already have a few band clamps we recommend the Bessey Variable Angle Band Clamp (100-594) because it also includes a reel that keeps the extra band from getting tangled up.  Painters tape can also be helpful at keeping all of the pieces aligned while getting the clamps in place, especially for 12 and 16-sided projects.

Don't be afraid to give these bits a try and add some non-90 ° corners to your projects. With the help of the Infinity Tools Birds Mouth Router Bits, setup blocks, and a little easy math you can create projects that definitely qualify as out of the box.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bird's mouth joint used for?

It's used to build staved assemblies like hollow masts, coopered round columns, and mitered cabinet corners. Long popular with boat builders, it creates light, strong structures. Browse more joinery router bits.

What shank size do these bits have?

These bird's mouth router bits have a 1/2" shank for stable, chatter-free cutting on a router table.

How many sides can I make with these bits?

The three sizes let you make 30 degrees/60 degrees joints (6 or 12 sides), 45-degree joints (8 sides), and 22.5-degree joints (16 sides), covering most staved column and mast designs.

What are the cutter dimensions?

Depending on size, the cutter diameter is 1-1/2" or 1-5/8" with a 7/8" cutter height.

Why is the bird's mouth joint so strong?

The joint is incredibly strong due to its increased glue surface and nesting geometry, which together create a robust bond compared with a simple miter.

Is this joint easier than a standard miter?

Yes. It's fast and accurate because only one edge of each workpiece needs to be profiled, and the nesting effect simplifies alignment during glue-up.

Are setup blocks included?

Setup blocks are available for all three bird's mouth bits but are sold separately. They eliminate guesswork and make setup quick and repeatable.

Can I buy all three bits together?

Yes. Infinity Tools offers a 3-piece bird's mouth router bit set that includes all three bits plus all three setup blocks for one price. See our router bit sets.

Who makes these router bits?

They are made by Infinity Cutting Tools. Explore the full line of carbide router bits for more options.

Do I need a router table for these bits?

Yes, the bird's mouth joint is made at the router table for safe, accurate profiling of each stave. Explore our router table packages if you need a setup.
